The Republican Party isn't Interested in Governing. Just Outrage.

So we are a little over a month into the Biden administration, and already there is just something in the air. Like a weight has collectively lifted off of the country’s shoulders. When we tune into a presidential press briefing we aren’t all holding our breath over the next idiotic thing our president does or says. Our executive branch is actually attempting to function and promote policies. And of course, the utter silence across Twitter is just so….magical.
Unfortunately, the veneer of normalcy is just that. The damage Trump and his republican cohorts have done cannot be understated and I don’t think one moderate Democrat in the white house is going to put Pandora back in the box. Everyone wants to collectively forget about the attempted coup from January as some kind of fluke and we are all past that now. Well, if you tuned into CPAC, one of the largest Republican conventions, you’d see Trump and many elected Republican officials just going back to their greatest hits of talking points which led to that very mob overrunning the capital: The election was stolen, Biden is a false president and hundreds of thousands of false votes were sent in by the democrat elites.
This talking point is met with constant praise and cheers in these republican circles. That and of course the notion that the virus is overblown and masks don’t do anything. The most hilarious part about the convention is that while these speakers were spreading complete lies about the election and the coronavirus, the network airing the conference had to butt in and throw a “we don’t want to get sued” disclaimer about how people should “do their own research”. Well, I feel much better about all those lies being said now that that disclaimer is thrown in. Something is very wrong when one political party’s primary stance needs to constantly be covered in legalese by the big corporations airing these lies or else they're sued for spreading slander.
The simple fact is all we got out of the day hundreds of angry deluded Trump supporters stormed the capital is a couple of slap on the wrists and some hilarious justice porn videos on reddit. I can’t say that I don’t enjoy watching grown men cry over being put on a no fly list or being arrested for their actions, but are we truly satisfied that this is the end of that day? No one spouting the actual lies about our government being stolen and how Biden is an illegitimate president is facing consequences. Impeachment round 2 of Trump died on the backs of his Republican boot lickers in the House and Senate.
And no one has learned anything. Not a month later all of the players are back to the same game. Our elected senators are proudly speaking about the fact that the current President of the United States was falsely elected and should be deposed. And we’re somehow shocked when the FBI puts out a statement that domestic terrorism cases have soared in recent months and are at least an equal a threat to this nation as foreign terrorism? We still have armed troops patrolling Washington DC right now. Congress had to rush through a session last week because of an apparent threat by Trumper’s that they were going to march on DC again and attack government buildings. None of this is going to get any better in the coming months. The Republican party has completely derailed from any sort of actual policy proposals and governmenting thanks partially to them seeing the path laid out by Trump. All they have now is lies, identity politics, and red meat for the base.
Seriously, think of ONE major policy proposal that the Republican party wants to get done to actually benefit Americans. And no, just a vague “Keep the brown people out” doesn’t count. Tune into the CPAC or Fox news and you’ll see. There’s not government policy there. It’s just old white men whining about shit, most of which is dog whistles and just straight lies. With all the shit facing our nation right now with a pandemic raging and crippling unemployment, skyrocketing house pricing, homelessness, deaths of despair, etc, all Republicans are focused on is who gets let into which public restroom or fake outrage over Dr Seuss being cancelled. Look at the democratic party and sure, there’s division and there's some assholes in there, but you also see REAL policy proposals across all spectrums. Minimum wage hikes, healthcare reform, immigration reform, voter reform, marijuana and drug reform, Universal Basic income, policies all proposed in huge bills in the House by the left.
Say what you want about Democrats and Biden, at least they want to TRY to change government and fix things. What do Republicans have to show for their two years of majority? A tax cut for the rich and the rich alone. No, the middle class didn’t get a real tax cut. It was a mirage, as many can now see their tax returns are getting tighter and tighter because the Republicans just moved that money into their paychecks and are taking it back out at the back end, as well as changing the standard deduction to hurt homeowners. Like everything else they propose, it was another grift that the middle and poorer class will be paying for for generations so that the top 1% can continue with their permanent tax cuts and they can keep “trickling it on down”. And as food costs, healthcare costs, and housing costs continue to rise past inflation, I’m starting to get the feeling that they’re not trickling down the wealth, but something else entirely.
